Passive and active exercises
Passive exercises
A characteristic feature of these exercises is that the animal remains passive throughout the treatment, while the movement in the joint is guided by the therapist.
Passive exercises are used:
- in the post-operative period to reduce the risk of unwanted adhesions and contractures
- in paralysed animals.
Active exercises
These require the active involvement of the animal. Various types of equipment (rehabilitation balls, ramps, crossbars, moving treadmills) can be used to perform them, as well as being able to exercise without equipment.
Active exercises are used:
- in patients with neurological symptoms, paresis and awkwardness treated conservatively and surgically
- to increase muscle strength
- to improve the animal’s performance, endurance, coordination and general condition.
